Programme Content
1. Project Management and Improvement Design
- Plan, manage and implement improvement activities. Develop the business case for improvement activity and implementation.
- Project selection and Scoping: Identify and scope improvement projects and establish clear measurable objectives
- Principles and methods: Use a structured method to deliver business benefits
- Includes: Project charter, Gantt chart, reporting documentation, Red Amber Green (RAG) status.
2. Communication
- Share improvement progress through appropriate reporting
- Influencing, reinforcement and coaching principles
3. Team Formation and Leadership
- Improvement Team roles and responsibilities in a change environment.
- Reflect on own practice and development needs
4. Change Management
- Roles of the manager and leader within change.
5. Using Lean Tools for Improvement Initiatives
- Process mapping & analysis: Apply process mapping tools to visualise processes, establishing key insights for performance improvement
- Lean tools: Apply techniques such as identification and removal of 8 wastes, 5S (Sort, Shine, Set, Standardise, Sustain), standard work, kaizen.
- Benchmarking: Recognise the value of sharing best practice
- Root cause analysis: Use cause and effect diagrams, technique of ‘5 whys’ and graphical analysis to understand and root causes
- Experimentation: Active analysis versus one factor at a time, ‘Plan/Do/Check/Act’
- Principles & methods: Six Sigma principles per ISO13053 (International Organisation for Standardisation
6. Using Data and Statistics
- Data acquisition for analysis: Develop data collection plan and measurement processes to understand performance
- Basic statistics & measures: Establish patterns and trends in data over time using tally, pie, run/trend and Pareto charts
- Problem definition: Exploratory data analysis, data collection planning, problem and goal statements
7. Voice of The Customer
- Apply techniques to identify customers, requirements and translate these to metrics

Reflect Apprenticeships
The entire programme can be delivered at the employer’s premises, remotely online or as a combination of the two. Our approach offers complete flexibility for apprentices to access our support at any time which suits their particular needs and those of their employer. We utilise a blended delivery model comprising group workshops, one-to-one coaching and mentoring and online teaching resources which are provided through our e-portfolio and virtual learning environment platforms.
Duration
This apprenticeship usually takes approximately 15 months to complete, including the End Point Assessment process.
Qualifications
Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.
Progression
Achievement of this apprenticeship is ideal preparation for the Improvement Practitioner Apprenticeship Standard, Management or Team Leading Apprenticeship.
Key Responsibilities of suitable applicants
Improvement Technicians are responsible for delivery and coaching of continuous improvement.
Typically, they work as a member of an operational team to resolve problems - preventing re-occurrence, engaging others in issues affecting them and to support the improvement of performance.
